Finland
So I briefly mentioned that I spent this Christmas in Finland. My mum turned 60 on Christmas Day and Matt reckoned we could go over and surprise her. It took a lot of planning, starting from around late August, but was very much worth it as mum was so happy to see us (after the initial shock... :p) and told me us going over was the best present she's ever had. So yes, Christmas 2015 was pretty special, even if not very conventional. It was also a little odd to be in Finland at Christmas and there to be no snow at all in Helsinki or Lappeenranta.
...nothing like this postcard, then! Haha. This is from a swap with Lilla in Finland last year. She was kind enough to send me a postcard with the Year of the Sheep stamp sheet issued in Åland.
I have no idea of the name or location of this lighthouse, all I know is that it's located somewhere in Finland. There isn't even any room for writing on the postcard (apart from address) as the stamp sheets takes up all the space. :D

Happy New Year 2016! I think it's about time for an update.. :P I don't even have a proper excuse for not updating sooner. It's been the usual - either I've been too busy or I just haven't been in the mood. The last few months of 2015 were pretty eventful, though, at least by my standards. It included a holiday to Gran Canaria, a trip to Finland, a Christmas job with Royal Mail and another trip to Finland - Matt and I went over for Christmas as we wanted to surprise my mum on her 60th birthday. The plan worked, too. :)
Anyway, 2016 is Year of the Monkey so here is a new year's card to celebrate the new year.
I do love Japanese New Year's cards. There seems to be so much variety, too. I have no idea where to get these in England, I haven't seen any anywhere near where I live.

Chinese New Year, France
A wonderful postcard I received from Veronique in France earlier this year, showing French Lunar Year stamps. Veronique says she couldn't find Chinese New Year/Year of the Sheep/Goat postcards in France so she tried to make on, so I'm not sure if this is her own design. If it is, well done! :)

Year of the Goat, Vietnam
One more card for today, a gorgeous Lunar New Year postcard from Vietnam. I find it interesting that in some countries Year of the Sheep is called Year of the Goat instead. I wonder why?
I have no idea what the Unesco cancellation is all about but it is very nice indeed!

Open market in Shaukeiwan, Hong Kong
A lovely market view from Hong Kong. The main point of this swap were the stamps and the first day cancellation but I really like the card as well.
Shaukeiwan, is a town in the Eastern District, located in the north east of Hong Kong Island. Literally, Shau Kei means a colander, and Wan implies that the town is developed along the coast. Nowadays it is a relatively densely populated town compared with some developing areas.

South Korea
A fantastic map card I received from a swap last year. I'd been hoping to receive this card for quite some time so I'm really happy to finally have a copy.
South Korea, officially the Republic of Korea, is a country in East Asia, constituting the southern part of the Korean Peninsula. It shares land borders with North Korea to the north, and oversea borders with China to the west and Japan to the east. South Korea lies in the north temperate zone with a predominantly mountainous terrain. It comprises an estimated 50 million residents distributed over 99,392 km2. The capital and largest city is Seoul, with a population of 10 million.
South Korea is a presidential republic consisting of 17 administrative divisions and is a developed country with a very high standard of living. It is Asia's fourth largest economy and the world's 15th (nominal) or 12th (purchasing power parity) largest economy. The economy is export-driven, with production focusing on electronics, automobiles, ships, machinery, petrochemicals and robotics. South Korea is a member of the United Nations, WTO, and OECD, and a founding member of APEC and the East Asia Summit.
I collect Chinese New Year stamps so I was really happy to see the stamp on the top. It's supposed to glow in the dark, too, but I haven't tried that yet...

Happy New Year 2012!
Happy New Year! Mine started pretty uneventfully - I stayed the New Year's Eve at home on my own, drinking lots of tea, watching 'The Mentalist' on dvd and trying to crochet a sock. Not that I mind spending time like that, I'm not generally much of a party person. I hope this year will be a good one and bring me lots of nice postcards amongst other things :D I haven't made any resolutions as I don't believe in them; I already know what I should do/achieve.
2012 is the Year of the Dragon. I received this gorgeous postcard from my dear Japanese friend Tam yesterday. Thank you so much, dear!
Incidentally, I really like these Chinese New Year's stamps and would love to receive them from other countries as well. If you are reading this and your country actually issues these stamps (the UK doesn't :() and you would like to swap, please let me know!

Year of the Rabbit
Another Year of the Rabbit postcard, this time from the lovely Shinta in Indonesia.
Isn't it a cute little rabbit? I sometimes wish I had a rabbit, but then I don't think I could handle it as they need hay and I'm allergic to it. :( A friend of mine used to have a rabbit years ago, it was adorable but also a bit silly at times as it kept trying to hump the family's cat. :D Obviously it thought it was a cat.. Haha, well, Matt's family have a duck and she also seems to think she's a cat sometimes (as she keeps trying to eat cat food)!
And look, this card came with a matching stamp! Or rather, stamps. The two rabbit ones are from a set of 3 Year of the Rabbit stamps issued earlier this year. I couldn't find any info about the third stamp so I'm not sure what it's supposed to show...

Year of the Rabbit
..and since I'm on the topic of Chinese New Year, I thought it would be appropriate to finish my posting today with this very nice Year of the Rabbit card I received from a swap from Hong Kong.
This card is from a set of 4 Year of the Rabbit cards. I got them all in this swap and this one is probably my favourite. White rabbits fascinate me.
Last year my Chinese friend organised a little New Year's party for some friends. It was really nice and I very much like the idea of having New Year as the main celebration of the year instead of Christmas. I don't think my friend is doing anything for friends this year as she's been pretty busy recently. I do hope she'll have something special with her family, though.
Anyway, back to the card. It came with a matching stamp! Unless I'm very much mistaken, it's also from a set of 4 stamps. The other two stamps are from a set of 16 definitives issued in 2006, showing birds.

According to the description on the back of this card, this postcard shows Uncle HO enjoying the Mid-Autumn Festival with youngsters in Hanoi Capital. I was a bit confused about the term 'Mid-Autumn festival' first, until I realised it's the same as the Moon Festival. It is a popular harvest festival celebrated by Chinese and Vietnamese people, dating back over 3,000 years to moon worship in China's Shang Dynasty.
The Mid-Autumn Festival is held on the 15th day of the eighth month in the Chinese calendar, which is in September or early October in the Gregorian calendar. It is a date that parallels the autumnal equinox of the solar calendar, when the moon is at its fullest and roundest. The traditional food of this festival is the mooncake, of which there are many different varieties.
The main point of this card is actually the stamps.. Vietnam follows the Chinese zodiac, except that instead of the Year of the Rabbit, it celebrates the Year of the Cat. Personally I find that very cool as the Cat is probably my favourite animal. ^_^
