Madinat Jumeirah and Burj Al Arab, Dubai

I was supposed to go to an Aikido class in Birmingham this morning with Matt, but he's not feeling too well and I'm not exactly feeling too great either - I hope I haven't caught the cold as well. :/ Anyway, I thought I'd post a few cards here instead. The first one is from a swap a few years ago, and still one of my only postcards from Dubai.

Madinat Jumeirah the Arabian Resort - Dubai, is a luxurious 5 star resort in Dubai and is also the largest resort in the emirate, spreading across over 40 hectares of landscapes and gardens. It is designed to resemble a traditional Arabian town. The resort comprises two boutique hotels (Al Qasr and Mina A'Salam) and a courtyard of 29 summer houses called Dar Al Masyaf. The resort has over 40 restaurants and bars.

Madinat Jumeirah is located along one kilometre of private beachfront adjacent to Jumeirah Beach Hotel, Burj Al Arab, and Wild Wadi Water Park. It is an approximate 30 minute drive from Dubai International Airport in non-peak traffic.

Burj Al Arab, Dubai

Dubai is another one of those places where I only have a few postcards from. ...and this is even older than the India postcard - I received this one in 2008!

Burj Al Arab is a 5-star (often misleadingly referred to as 7-star) luxury hotel located in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. At 321 m, it is the fourth tallest hotel in the world. Burj Al Arab stands on an artificial island 280 m out from Jumeirah beach, and is connected to the mainland by a private curving bridge.

Burj Al Arab was designed by British architect Tom Wright of WS Atkins PLC. The design and construction were managed by Canadian engineer Rick Gregory also of WS Atkins. Construction of the Island began in 1994. It was built to resemble the sail of a dhow, a type of Arabian vessel. Two "wings" spread in a V to form a vast "mast", while the space between them is enclosed in a massive atrium. The building opened in December 1999.

Dubai Museum

More old cards... This is actually one of my oldest postcrossing swap cards - it's from December 2007! I like it how it's also a slightly different postcard of Dubai in that it doesn't show one of the most famous landmarks (Burj Al Arab?).

Dubai Museum is the main museum in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. It is located in the Al Fahidi Fort, built in 1787 and is the oldest existing building in Dubai. The museum was opened by the ruler of Dubai in 1971, with the aim of presenting the traditional way of life in the Emirate of Dubai. The museum houses many exhibits from Dubai's history. There are several static displays showing Dubai life from ages past, including souk, fishing, domestic and desert travel scenes.

Galleries show scenes from the Creek, traditional Arab houses, mosques, the souk, date farms as well as desert and marine life. These galleries reflect the nature of the UAE, from the beach to the city and the oasis areas to the nomadic Bedouin culture.

Artifacts from several excavated sites in Dubai date back to the third millennium B.C. The two main excavated sites in Dubai were discovered in Jumeirah and Al Qusais.

The stamps are from a set of 7 definitives from 2007, called the 5th Definitive Series. The design shows the word "Emirates" in Arabic, shaped as a falcon.
